A.      Stick to brevity

This is a bit of a general tip, but the reason we’re mentioning it right here at the top is that it has to be applied everywhere.

You have to bear in mind that the place where you’re sending your resume probably has a lot of others sent to it as well. The hiring manager won’t be able to dedicate a lot of time to each resume. They’ll skim it and then decide whether the person has to be called or not.

By keeping everything short, you can help the hiring manager quickly understand the details you need them to.

Whether it is writing the personal information part or the descriptions of your past experiences, you should keep them short.

B.      Make sure your description/bio section is concise and impactful

Now, let’s move on to something a bit specific.

Usually, a resume has the following parts:

  1. Personal bio/description
  2. Experiences
  3. Skills

And so forth. From these different parts, the description usually has the most text in it. It is the description that the hiring manager usually looks at.

Since it plays a major role in the resume, you have to ensure that the bio section is impactful and concise.

By impactful, we mean that it should consist of such words, terms, and sentences that impress the hiring manager and help them understand your professional self. It should contain highly relevant information that directly describes your proficiency.

For example, in the bio section, you can mention your past achievements, like:

  • Led a sales team for 3 years with a 150% success rate (or something)
  • Acted as the CEO of a Fortune 500 company

And so forth. These are thetypes of impactful elements that you have to add to your bio.

Now, along with making the description impactful, you also have to keep it concise. The words and sentences you use could have an impact, but they could get abandoned if they are too long and lengthy.

When you find a job that you want to apply to, you should add those skills to your resume that are directly relevant to that job. For example, you may have proficiency in web development, but you won’t mention that as a skill if you are applying for a manager position at a textile factory.

Even if the skills listed are few but strictly relevant, they can leave a good impact on the hiring manager. On the other hand, if you list 30 skills but only five of them are relevant, it can make you look unprofessional and thus unfit for the position.

D.     Mention the right job experiences in your resume

Just as you have to add the right skills for the job, the same goes for the experiences. Even if you have a lot of them, not every experience has to be mentioned when applying for a specific job.

For example, if you had, at some point in life, done a job as a graphic designer at a small startup, you don’t need to mention that experience if you are applying for an executive position at a big firm 20 years later.

You should list those experiences that show your history in the line of work similar to the job that you’re applying for. Or, even if you want to mention all of your experiences, be sure to highlight and elaborate on the ones that are relevant. It may not be possible to skip some experiences since taking them out could leave a big gap in your working years.

E.      Read and check once done to find and remove grammar and spelling errors

Grammar and spelling errors in your resume can be very harmful and damaging to your chances of getting selected for the job. These types of mistakes and errors in the resume can show that you are not careful and dedicated to detail. Should these qualities become visible to the hiring manager, your reputation can get damaged in their eyes.

The solution to this problem is quite simple. All you have to do is check and read all the content in your resume from start to finish a couple of times once you are done writing it.

Simply by reading the text, you can spot many errors that you may have unknowingly made during the writing part. Of course, there can be other errors that you could still skip—even when proofreading.
